Blackjack is the most popular casino game which involves comparing of cards. This game is played between a player and a dealer (employed by the casino), where the player competes against the dealer rather than other players. This game is played with one or multiple 52 card decks.
The game begins with the players sitting down and the dealer standing. The dealer is in charge of shuffling and dealing the cards and taking the bets. The players place their bets in a circle or box within the minimum and maximum bet range. First, the players are handed out two cards and the dealer takes one card face up and another face down, which is not revealed till the end. On receiving the two cards, a player adds up the value of his individual cards. Face cards are valued as 10 and the ace can be counted as 1 or 11 according to the combination of his cards. For example, if a player’s first two cards are an ace and a 10-card, then the ace is counted as 11 and this is a natural (Blackjack). The aim of the game is to get a total that is equal to 21 or a total that is less than 21 but higher than the dealer. The player should ensure that the total doesn't cross 21 and thereby the game is also referred to as '21'.
After receiving 2 cards, a player must "hit" or take an additional card from the dealer until his total is 17 or above. He can "stand" or not ask for another card during the course of the game, but in the end has to avoid getting "busted" or exceeding a grand total of 21, which will result in losing his bet. If the dealer gets "busted" then the player wins if his total is less than or equal to 21. The player can also "double down" which means he can increase his bet during the game if he feels his cards have the potential to win.
